Kayaking for food at the pool
Kayaking enthusiasts are invited to the Homer Pool 8:30 to 10 p.m. Dec. 22 and 29 as a benefit for the Homer Community Food Pantry. Participants bring four non-perishable food items as donation to the food pantry. Arrive at 8 p.m. to get ready to paddle, sign waivers and select kayak and gear, and bring a bathing suit. Cosmic Kitchen is holding a children’s blanket drive through December. Drop blankets in new or excellent condition at Cosmic Kitchen on Pioneer Avenue.
Anchor Point Chamber hosts light event
‘Tis the season to show off your holiday spirit – be a part of the annual Anchor Point community holiday lighting contest, sponsored by the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce and Homer Electric Association. Judging will be in three categories: residential, business and non-profit. First place winners will be awarded a $100 energy credit, which will be presented at the Anchor Point Community Awards banquet on Jan. 23.
To enter, download forms from the Anchor Point Chamber website at www.anchorpointchamber.org/Forms/lightingcontestform.pdf or pick up a form at any Anchor Point business. Entries must be received by 5 p.m. Dec. 29.
Pick up a nomination form for community awards, including citizen of the year, at the Anchor Point Library, Post Office , Senior Center or at the Anchor Point Chamber of Commerce. Nominations must be received by 5 p.m. on Jan 8, to be eligible.
Avalanche conditions high
With the new snow, the approaching weekend and the holidays, Alaska State Troopers are warning backcountry recreationalists about the increase in avalanche danger. Before heading out, AST encourages people to file a trip plan with detailed information regarding where you will be recreating and what time you will return. Give your trip plan to someone who will call to report you missing when you do not check in or return on time.
