FYI – Dec. 30

Share the warmth
The Share the Warmth coat and clothing drive launched on Dec. 26. The project benefits the community by collecting warm coats and other clothing for those who may need help this winter.
Flyers and collection boxes are set up at Captain’s Coffee, Homer’s Jeans, Redden Marine, Safeway, Save U More and Ulmers.
The participating businesses are encouraged to engage in a friendly competition to collect the most items.
Last year the effort resulted in more than 1,200 items donated by customers of the participating businesses. The collected coats, vests, and sweaters would have created a stack over 60 feet tall if piled on top of each other, including gloves, scarves, boots, shoes and children’s clothing.
Share the Warmth will continue through Jan. 17.

Parnell adds spring ferry runs to Kodiak
Gov. Sean Parnell has directed the Alaska Marine Highway System to schedule additional ferry runs between Homer and Dutch Harbor in May 2010 and 2011.
The change means the ferry Tustumena will depart from Homer twice in May, stopping in Kodiak, Chignik, Sand Point, King Cove, False Pass, Akutan and Unalaska/Dutch Harbor. Specific dates for departure will be available the first week of January. This doubling of the usual schedule supports delivery of crews and supplies for the summer fishing season, and provides increased access for residents and tourists.
To free the Tustumena for its additional Aleutian service, the ferry Kennicott will cover the Tustumena’s normal service to Whittier, Kodiak, Homer and Seldovia. This will benefit the Kodiak Crab Festival, as the larger Kennicott can carry larger, more exciting carnival rides for the popular Memorial Day weekend event, said Transportation Commissioner Leo von Scheben.
