It’s hard to fight global warming wearing mittens

While the mercury has been holding steady at a relatively mild level the past week or so, I’m not foolish enough to think that it’s all that climate change and global warming stuff I’ve been hoping for. I figure, in another 70 years or so, Homer will become a tropical, sun-kissed beach to rival the Bahamas and the Virgin Islands.

Are we paying attention?

It’s 6:15 p.m., two days before Christmas, and you are cruising home in your 136-foot tug after completing an ice survey near Prince William Sound. The weather is clear, and you are looking forward to spending the holidays with family and friends. You’ve got a lot on your mind. Bush administration launched bad trend
I’ve been trying to figure out what happened to our country. I am 87 years old and a veteran of WWII. I was more fortunate than my younger brother, who was killed in the Philippines. I believe poor judgment by our leadership the past few years is responsible for our present [...]

Because of the importance of climate change – not only to Alaska, but also the rest of the world – his misstatements need correction, lest people form erroneous views.

Healthcare bill faces more hurdles

Usually by this time of year, members of Congress stop hearing from their constituents because they’ve got other things on their minds – Christmas cards and presents and family gatherings to celebrate the holidays. But not this year.

Tug’s accident raises questions

The final drawing down of tanks aboard a tug boat that spilled an estimated 33,500 gallons of diesel fuel after hitting Bligh Reef on Dec. 23 was expected to be completed by Tuesday. However, officials say they have not yet determined what caused the grounding on Alaska’s well-marked navigational hazard.

Alumni squeak by stubborn Mariner varsity squad

Much like the Homer High School football team of 2009, members of the Mariner men’s basketball program just never give up.
Down by two points with seconds remaining, the M’s tried a long inbound pass to 6-foot-7-inch center Devon Kennelty. It almost worked.
