I am proud to announce that, with the help of many amazing and generous people, we have reached our goal of $15,000 to start work on the memorial to my mother, Jean Keene. It has been a long road and I won’t lie, there were many times when I was ready to pack it all in and use the funds that we had received to rethink our original plans and come up with something more modest. That being said, I just can’t help but think that if the goal hadn’t been achieved, I would have been left with the lingering feeling that I was somehow selling the old girl short. It just goes to show that persistence, networking and some hard work will eventually pay off. There were many people out there besides myself who exercised all of those things to get this done. I owe them all my undying gratitude.
The efforts became refocused in October around Mom’s birthday, and the entire project seemed to take on a second wind. To be honest, I can’t think of a more amazing birthday present to her than everyone banding together to make this dream a reality. I have a hunch she’s looking down on all of us and thinking that we shouldn’t have gone to the trouble. Anyone who knew Mom knew that she would never want anyone to go to any trouble for her. Still, I also know she is smiling, knowing that so many people cared enough to make it happen.
So there it is. Mission accomplished.
We are still considering artists who are looking to truly turn the dream into reality, but we have it narrowed down to a select few that are local to Homer. I’m working on some basic ideas that I plan to submit to whomever we end up choosing. I have a hunch it will be an epic piece that will really do her proud. We plan to keep the plans a bit under-wraps until things are finalized, but I am personally hoping to integrate a beautiful garden into the works.
With that in mind, there might be the need for some ongoing maintenance. At the risk of sounding greedy, anyone who would still like to contribute to the fund is absolutely welcome to do so and you have my personal assurance that any additional funds will be used for the ongoing care of the memorial.
Donations can be directly deposited into Wells-Fargo account no. 2527103044 from any branch location.
So, I offer up a bit of a cyber “high-five” and hugs to all of you for your support, contributions, thoughts and strength through this amazing process. I can’t even explain the amazing feeling I had when I got confirmation that the goal had been reached. I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised, since – when it came to my Mom – there always seemed to be a bit of magic involved.
That magic will surely be missed by many, but will hopefully live on forever through the memorial that you have all helped to build in so many ways.
Regards and thanks.
