After the crowd had quieted and the waves subsided at last weekend’s chaotic Alaska Swimming and Diving Championships in Anchorage, a pair of Homer girls – Donna McNulty and Marie Schmidt – came back home with top-10 finishes in their events.
Schmidt placed sixth in the grueling 500-yard freestyle with a time of five minutes, 29.19 seconds while McNulty took sixth in the 100-yard breaststroke – coming in at 1:11.72 – and eighth in the 500 free at 5:40.92.
“They were both so excited,” said Head Coach Anna Borland-Ivy. “Marie dropped four seconds off her time between (preliminaries) and finals and Donna had a best time in the final that was one second off the school record.”
Overall, the Homer girls team scored seven points and finished in a three-way tie for 14th place with Kenai and Petersburg.
Next year’s team could be even better, said Borland-Ivy.
“I’m pretty happy about how the season went and I think most of the swimmers are, as well,” she said. “Next year, we’re only losing three seniors so we should have a real strong year.”
