Kachemak Swim Club gobbles up the goods

Kachemak Swim Club swimmers gobbled up the lion’s share of awards at the Soldotna Silver Salmon 2009 Gobble Gobble Invitational Tournament over the weekend, placing first in 19 of 58 events.
Marie Schmidt opened things up early with a win in the girls 400-yard individual medley. Schmidt, one of the Schmidt triplet team, finished first with a time of 5 minutes, 2.81 seconds. Her two sisters, Kathryn and Emily, finished fourth and fifth, with times of 5:51.24 and 5:53.59 respectively.
Marie Schmidt also took the top spot in the 200 backstroke, coming in at 2:20.10. She also placed second in the 100 backstroke, finishing in 1:05.65; second in the 100 freestyle in 59.99 seconds; and third in the 100 butterfly in 1:10.07.
Dana Olesch took the top spot in the 500 freestyle, posting a time of 6:07.34. Her first-place finish in the 100 freestyle edged Schmidt by just over half a second, at 59.31 seconds. Olesch finished second in the 50 freestyle with a time of 27.48 seconds, and second in the 100 butterfly at 1:08.68.
Also turning in impressive performances for the KSC girls was Donna McNulty, who swept the 200 breaststroke and 200 freestyle with dominating times. McNulty edged teammate Emily Schmidt in the breaststroke, coming in at 2:37.17 to Schmidt’s 2:53.86. Lydia Arndt took third in 3:06.45, as well as second in the 200 butterfly (2:59.61). McNulty’s first-place finish in the 200 freestyle came at 2:11.42, and she rounded things off with another first-place finish in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:13.43.
For the boys, Mark Nagle took the top spot in the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:44.64. Brother James finished second at 3:02.13. Mark took second in the 200 IM, coming in at 2:50.14, while James then placed second in the 100 freestyle in 1:03.04. James Nagle also took first in the 100 butterfly with a time of 1:16.77. James Reid placed second at 1:19.05.
Reid also saw good times in the 200 freestyle, coming in third at 2:22.46, and third in the 100 freestyle at 1:04.41. He took second in the 50 freestyle, finishing in 28.27 seconds.
Rounding out top performances by Kachemak swimmers were Hunter Warren in the boys 8-and-under 25-yard backstroke. Warren finished in 22.99 seconds. Spencer Warren placed second in the boys 10-and-under 50-yard backstroke (51:49 seconds) while Seth Classen took third (53.30 seconds). Lauren Kuhns finished second in the girls 12-and-under 50-yard backstroke with a time of 41.86 seconds, as well as second in the 50-yard breaststroke (44.67).
Gregory Smith (37.67 seconds) and Cyrus Cowan (53.12 seconds) took first and second in the boys 12-and-under 50-yard backstroke. Smith also took the top spot in the 50-yard breaststroke with a time of 42.09 seconds.
