The Homer Mariner Hockey team struggled against Peninsula rival Soldotna over the weekend, falling 0-8 in conference play.
Mariner goalkeeper Luke Eckert, a senior, stopped an impressive 27 of 35 shots on goal. However, the Stars’ deep bench of experienced players proved too much for the younger and smaller M’s.
Currently, Homer’s roster comprises four seniors, three juniors, three sophomores and three freshmen. And while the team has had no problems against junior varsity squads they are sometimes forced to play, the older, more established varsity programs continue to give them trouble.
Soldotna dominated early in Friday’s game, scoring three goals in the first period. They added four more in the second period, and finished with a single goal in the third to seal the Mariners’ fate.
Homer managed an impressive 25 shots on goal for the game. However, Soldotna goalkeeper William Granger was able to turn all of them away.
The Mariners picked up six penalties in the game, while the Stars were only whistled for two.
Next up for the M’s is their End of the Road Shootout this weekend at Kevin Bell Arena. Homer hosts Juneau, Hutchison and Eagle River in their annual invitational tourney. The Mariners start with a match-up against Juneau at 7 p.m. tomorrow.
