Governor to ask for construction money
Gov. Parnell is advocating a new spending program to create construction jobs across the state by addressing the backlog of deferred maintenance projects for state-owned facilities.
“I will do what it takes to maximize construction opportunities in Alaska to put Alaskans to work,” Parnell said.
The governor’s state capital budget will include $100 million for deferred maintenance projects in each of the next five years. The budget will fund repair and renovation projects throughout Alaska for roads, ferries, airports, university buildings and other public facilities.
The University of Alaska allocation of the $100 million is about $37 million. The university has about 400 buildings statewide with an estimated replacement value of $2.6 billion. The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities has a deferred maintenance backlog of more than $400 million.

HEA gives light bulbs
HEA is making the energy-smarter compact fluorescent light bulbs available to customers throughout the Kenai Peninsula. Go to HEA with five old-model light bulbs, and trade them in for five of the new bulbs free. The goal of “Kick inCan” program is to put 7,000 CFLs into the hands of HEA members between now and the end of the year. The bulbs also will be available at the Salvation Army, Homer Food Pantry, and at the villages of Seldovia, Nanwalek and Port Graham. Replacing incandescent bulbs with CFLs can save energy: a 15-watt CFL bulb uses 75 percent less energy than a 60 watt incandescent bulb to produce the same amount of light.
