You don’t have to be a daredevil skier or snowboarder to appreciate the high-flying acrobatics of the professionals – the real daredevils who get paid to hurl themselves down terrain most of us would be content to enjoy from the window of an airplane.
It’s the beautiful reckless abandon of pros like Seth Morrison, Sage Cattabriga-Alosa and Jeremy Jones – caught on 16mm tape by the action sports pros at Teton Gravity Research – that will be the main attraction Friday night when hoards of local snowhounds descend upon the Homer Theatre to see “Re:Session,” the latest film from TGR.
The annual event – in its fourth year – is put on by the folks at Kachemak Ski Club and figures to be their biggest fundraiser of the year.
“This movie is really great,” said KSC organizer Nell Gustafson. “This event raised about $3,000 for us last year – money that helps us keep the rope tow in operation. It goes toward things like insurance, which may not seem as cool as a chairlift but is really the nuts and bolts of the operation.”
KSC members are especially proud of their latest completed project at the Ohlson Mountain rope tow – renovation of the warm-up hut. Thanks in part to fundraising efforts like the annual ski movie, the hut now has a new foundation, a new roof and more windows.
Eventually, KSC would like to add a deck to the front of the warm-up hut.
“That’s something that will add a lot to those beautiful, sunny days when you’re tired from skiing and all you want to do is soak up the sun and look at the beautiful view,” said Gustafson.
The event begins at 7 p.m. Friday with a fashion show featuring the wares of local gear and outdoor clothing vendors like Homers Jeans, Homer Saw and Cycle and Ulmers. Tickets are $15 and are available at the theatre or the Homer Bookstore.
Moviegoers can also enter a drawing – sponsored by TGR – to win a grand prize heli-skiing trip for two from Alaska Heliskiing or a second place prize of a vacation for two to Jackson Hole, Wyo.
In years past, KSC has put on films from Warren Miller, but decided this year to switch things up.
“We ran it by a few of the kids and they were like, ‘Way cool, let’s do Teton Gravity,’ so it was a no-brainer,” said Gustafson.
“Re:Session” premiered in Teton Village, Wyo. Sept. 19 and has been touring the country ever since. The film was shot on location in Italy, Poland, Colorado, Wyoming and Haines, Alaska.
“‘Re:Session’ takes viewers beyond the traditional ski and snowboard movie into a revolutionary realm of action sports entertainment,” according to the film’s Web site, www.tetongravity.com. “Check out forbidden powder in Poland, massive wedges in Colorado, new gap jumps in Utah and seven weeks of epic riding conditions in Alaska.
“‘Re:Session’ brings the most talented athletes in the sport together into one must-see film.”
