Bitten by the flu and injury bugs, the Homer High wrestling team found itself down five wrestlers when it arrived in Seward last weekend for the annual King of the Mountain Tournament and was forced to forfeit in six different weight classes.
The disadvantage of having three sick athletes – combined with tournament-ending injuries to Lucas Reyes and Chris Alfiche (171 lb.) – proved too much for the rest of the Mariner mat men to overcome and the team returned to Homer on Saturday without a victory in seven attempts.
The tournament was not a total loss, however, as team captain “Hurricane” Mitch Wyatt (160) performed well enough to vault into second place in the state standings, according to www.akmat.org.
“Winds clocked in at over 30 miles an hour Friday night and by the time Homer left Seward, Mitch had pinned all seven of his opponents,” said Homer Head Coach Chris Perk.
Wyatt, still nursing a foot injury left over from football season, trails only West Anchorage’s Buddy Pressler in the state standings. Pressler narrowly defeated Wyatt in two matches in Nikiski on Oct. 16 and 17.
Juniors Larry Croft (189) and Ben Harville (285) also turned in impressive performances, combining for 11 wins and just three losses over the tournament.
The M’s hope to be reconstituted this weekend as they head to the Mat-Su Valley on Friday for the two-day North South Tournament at Colony and Wasilla High Schools.
