Cougars lose heartbreaker in championship game
The Voznesenka eight-man football team – in its first official year – had a very successful 2009 season, advancing to the State Championship on Oct. 3 against Point Hope in Chugiak. The Cougars were missing six of their 14 players due to eligibility rules, however, and weren’t quite able to make up for the loss. They dropped a close, hard-fought game to the Harpooners 28-30.
After turning the ball over three times in the first half and falling behind 0-24, Voznesenka came back in the second half to pull to within 20-24. The Cougars’ scoring came off two touchdown passes by Joe Martishev and a blocked punt return for a score by David Martishev. Unfortunately, the Cougars ran out of time before completing their comeback.
HHS wrestlers headed back to the mat
After losing three state tournament-qualifying seniors to graduation, the Homer Mariner wrestling team is going to have some big shoes to fill as their season gets underway, said Head Coach Chris Perk, 2008 Northern Lights Conference Coach of the Year. Tops on that list of contenders is junior Mitch Wyatt (160), who won 40 matches as a sophomore, finished fifth at state and has already been named team captain. Among those hoping to make the varsity team are returning wrestlers Larry Croft (215), Ben Harville (285) and Eli Garvey (103). The Mariners started practice Sept. 28 and will compete for the first time at Kenai’s Luke Spruill Tournament on Oct. 10.
