An incomplete Homer Mariner wrestling team comprising just five wrestlers kicked off their 2009 season last Saturday, competing with teams from all over the Kenai Peninsula in the Luke Spruill Takedown Tournament in Kenai.
Shorthanded by at least half their team – the other half was busy battling Soldotna on the football field – the M’s still put on an impressive showing. Mariner senior Eli Garvey (103 lbs.) and sophomore Shlomo Gherman (152), both won more matches than they lost.
Gherman went undefeated in the takedown tournament, scoring a whopping 40 takedowns in his three matches.
“He was very aggressive, with both upper-body moves – such as a lateral drop – and quick leg attacks,” said Homer Head Coach Chris Perk. “He seemed to score from all three positions very well.”
Garvey, who finished sixth in last year’s regional tournament, went 2-1 in his three matches Saturday. Garvey scored 15 takedowns.
The Mariners will welcome back their football-playing teammates – including veteran wrestlers like Mitch Wyatt and Ben Harville – when they host a dual meet against West Anchorage and Nome tomorrow at 6 p.m. After that, it’s off to Nikiski Friday for a two-day tournament that begins at 2 p.m.
