The Homer High swim team dominated a trio of Kenai Peninsula competitors at last Saturday’s Seward Quad Meet, sweeping the top spot in the girls, boys and combined-team standings.
For the Mariner girls, Katie Spence led the way with victories in the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard backstroke, while Lydia Arndt dropped 18 seconds off her personal best time in the 100-yard backstroke.
Miron Martishev also had a personal-best time, taking 18 seconds off his 200-yard individual medley. Nathaniel Hardy also dropped four seconds off his best time in the 100-yard freestyle.
“Those are just phenomenal drops,” said Homer Head Coach Anna Borland-Ivy.
At this point in the season, it’s unusual to see so many personal-best times, said Borland-Ivy, as most swimmers are pushing themselves in practice to the point of exhaustion. As the team gets nearer to the season-ending regional and state meets, they will rest their bodies.
“That’s what we’re really shooting for – a good regional meet,” said Borland-Ivy. “I don’t expect a lot of personal best times this time of year so when it does happen, it’s a nice bonus.”
