With only days left until the all-important regional swim meet at Skyview High – where state qualifiers will be decided and the seasons of many swimmers will end in disappointment – the Homer Mariner swim team could have been forgiven for slacking off at last weekend’s Peninsula Invitational.
But slack off they did not.
Swimming in their own pool against teams from Seward, Skyview and Soldotna high schools, several Mariners again registered personal best times in their events – and a few of them won.
“It’s not that we’re pushing them at this point,” said Homer Head Coach Anna Borland-Ivy. “It wouldn’t have bothered me to have the weekend off, but they swam really well.”
Marie Schmidt led the way for the Homer girls, placing first in the 200-yard freestyle with a personal best time of two minutes, 6.36 seconds. She also took first in the 500-yard freestyle.
Katherine Spence, Dana Olesch and Donna McNulty all had first place finishes, as well, in the 50-yard freestyle, 100-yard butterfly and 100-yard breaststroke respectively.
For the Mariner boys, Alder Fletcher took a full five seconds off his personal best in the 100-yard backstroke, and scored an easy win with a blazing time of 1:02.33.
“Alder is just lighting the pool on fire every time he swims these days,” said Borland-Ivy.
Until the team takes off for Skyview on Thursday, Borland-Ivy has just one simple instruction – rest.
“I told them not to go out and play soccer or anything,” she said.
