Hornaday back in the saddle

It didn’t take long for Mayor Jim Hornaday to break out with his trademark ukulele.
After presiding over his first Homer City Council meeting since beginning prostate cancer treatments in California nearly three months ago, a tan and healthy-looking Hornaday thanked council members for holding down the fort in his absence.
He then serenaded them with a few bars of John Denver’s “Back Home Again.”

Borough Mayor passes 1-year hurdle

On Kenai Peninsula Borough Mayor Dave Carey’s 368th day in office, he provided an update to borough officials on the state of the economy as “a tipped portrait” – up in a flood of government spending and down in gross sales revenue.
Carey was in Homer on Thursday to make his presentation, following updates in Soldotna and Kenai earlier in the week. He is one-third of the way through his first term of office, with two years remaining.

Hogan hits the ground running

If you had never seen the Homer City Council in action before and picked Monday night’s meeting for your first live experience, you probably would not have guessed that Kevin Hogan was the new kid on the block.
Freshly inaugurated during a special council meeting Oct. 20 and seated comfortably to the right of Mayor James Hornaday, Hogan got right to business at his first council meeting – making good on campaign promises to bring a different perspective to the council and to focus budget discussions on the expense side of the city ledger.

Teen girls take on trash challenge

EcoLogical – a band of five junior high girls on a mission to win the national 2009 Lexus Eco Challenge – put on a fashion show Saturday at Islands and Ocean Visitors Center. The fashion “from trash” show drew some 100 people and 29 models who displayed clothing from recycled products, bread bags, newspapers, plastic sacks and even a dress made of Capri Sun drink containers.

The real cost of healthcare

Americans have known for a long time that healthcare costs in the United States are outrageously ridiculous. In many hospital settings, the biggest surprise following in-patient care is the bottom line on the bill. Why do items provided in the hospital cost what is beyond normal rationale? Why does a $4 plastic sitzbath cost $24? Why does an $8 donut cushion cost $35? If a washcloth costs $20, how inflated is a heart surgery? Why are these absurd charges tolerated? Who approves them? Who’s doing anything about it?
