HOMER TRIBUNE/Sean Pearson - Mariner Ben Jantzi makes the tackle on a Kenai player in Saturday’s game at Homer High School. The Mariners fell 55-7 in conference play, but scored the first points on the Kardinals this year.
By most accounts, Homer’s game against the Kenai Kardinals at home on Saturday was pretty ugly.
If the 48-point rout wasn’t enough to tip you off, perhaps a few questionable calls by referees and a series of unfortunate Mariner events that led to the 55-7 loss to Kenai would make things clear.
Despite the endless string of Kardinal touchdowns and a stinging fourth-quarter safety, the Homer Mariners held their heads high following the conference match-up. With only two games remaining in the regular season, Homer became the first team to score against the Northern Lights powerhouse. The Mariners’ touchdown ended Kenai’s shutout streak at five games.
The No. 1 Kards, are 3-0 in the conference, and 6-0 overall, and have now outscored their opponents 327-7. Homer fell to 2-2 in the conference and 3-2 overall, and also clinched a playoff berth with Houston’s loss over the weekend to Kodiak.
The Mariners host the Valdez Buccaneers on Saturday amid Homecoming festivities. The junior varsity kicks things off at noon, with varsity following at 3 p.m.
Homer’s final regular-season game will be at home against Kodiak next weekend.
