Rangvald T. Lind
Longtime Homer resident, Mr. Rangvald T. “Ray” Lind, 90, died peacefully Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at his home in Homer.
At his request there will be no services. His ashes will be inurned at Fort Richardson National Cemetery in Fort Richardson, and in Alaska at a later date.
Ray was born January 30, 1919 to August and Hellen Lind in Cuyuna, MN. The youngest son in a family of eight children, he attended Crosby, Minnesota schools through the eighth grade when he dropped out of school to work on the home farm and to help support his widowed mother. He later earned his GED while serving in the U.S. Navy. Ray enlisted in the U.S. Navy to “see the world,” on March 5, 1940 and was honorably discharged March 5, 1946 with the rank of Aviation Machinist’s Mate First Class. Most of his Navy hitch was served aboard the light cruiser, USS Savannah, starting with convoy duty escorting Lend-Lease supplies to England and continuing with fire support for the Allied invasions of North Africa, Sicily and Italy.
In 1942 Ray was temporarily assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Yorktown, and survived the sinking of that ship during the battle of Midway. In 1947, looking for work and adventure, Ray drove the newly opened Alcan Highway to Fairbanks, Alaska. He soon moved to Anchorage, where he worked for several years in construction. In 1954, he began working at Fort Richardson as a Civil Service Heavy Equipment diesel mechanic, a position he held until his retirement in 1973. Ray met his second wife, Alice L. Kendall in 1966 and they were married in December of that year. They lived and worked in Anchorage until 1979 when he retired to Homer where they had purchased land on East End Road. Ray was a member of the American Legion Post 0557 in Deerwood, MN as well as a lifetime member of the V.F.W. Post 10046 in Soldotna.
?Ray had many interests that included travel, photography, bowling, baseball, reading, swimming, fishing, rock collecting and building flying radio controlled model airplanes. He loved to laugh and tell tales of his early days. Hard farm work had given him a strong body and he enjoyed clearing land and helping friends with heavy work. He loved beauty in nature, children, animals of all kinds and the “golden oldie” dance music. He was a good hearted man of honesty, integrity and loyalty.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Carl and Victor Lind; sisters, Ethyl Larson, Ellen Dahlberg, Evelyn Beddow and Irene Burgstaler. He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Alice of Homer, AK; brother and sister in-law, Clarence and Marie Lind of Crosby, MN; son, Donald John Kellerman of Cleveland, TN; many nieces and nephews and their families all of whom he loved dearly. He is also survived by numerous friends, young and old and by former ship mates.
