Approximately four and half miles or a 40-45 minute boat ride from the Homer Harbor is China Poot Bay. A favorite place for locals to dipnet an Alaskan favorite: Red (or Sockeye) salmon. Dipnetting is open to personal use fishery (the taking, attempting to take or possession of finfish, shellfish or aquatic plants by an individual Alaskan for consumption as food, or use as bait, by that individual or his immediate family) from July 1 through August 7 in the fresh waters above the Fish and Game marker. Snagging is allowed below the markers in salt water only.
If you just weren’t able to soak up enough sunshine at Concert on the Lawn on Sunday, it’s not too late.
With three days of music, a talent show and a number of water events, Nanwalek’s annual “Fun in the Sun” Festival has all the makings of some lively play across Kachemak Bay. This is the home of the English Bay Band, and they will be performing along with other bands from Homer and the Kenai Peninsula.

While many Americans mark spring by dyeing chicken eggs, Bill Glick marks spring by dyeing sockeye salmon smolt.
Each spring, Glick, an Alaska Department of Fish and Game fish biologist, captures a few thousand Kenai River sockeye smolt, dyes them gold and releases them back into the river. Kenai River smolt dyeing began in 2005 as part of a Fish and Game mark and recapture project to estimate out-migrating smolt abundance.
