Teams and individuals brought in 950 bags of trash to the Chamber of Commerce Saturday concluding another annual clean-up day to eliminate some of the debris that collects over winter. Youth brought in 109, adults 157, groups 400, families 87. Recycling netted 197 bags. This year’s efforts topped 2007 by 83 bags.
Prizes were awarded to the three top collectors in each category and an additional 16 people won prizes from fluorescent coupons hidden in “garbage hotspots.”
Any young person who brought in a bag of trash was eligible to win one of the four youth bikes, donated by the Kachemak Bay Lions Club, which also cooked a hearty lunch of hot dogs and hamburgers for participants. Pepsi, Fat Olives and Save-U-More donated food for the volunteers.
Other sponsors include Alaska Waste, Homer Landfill, Kachemak Bay Lions, Kachemak Bay Rotary and Downtown Rotary, Kenai Peninsula Borough, and Loopy Lupine Recycling. Numerous other businesses and organizations contributed prizes and money.
